Once you finally have the beautiful wood fence installed that you’ve been dreaming about for what seems like forever, your next decision involves where to go from there. Now you need to consider if you’ll leave it as it is or if you want to paint or stain it. Here is some valuable information about each option to help you determine the best way to go for your needs:
- Leave it Natural – If you love the aged look that wood gets as it becomes weathered or you simply don’t want to have to deal with paint or stain, leaving it natural could be your best option. Each type of wood fence material will age in a different way, so be sure to ask about what you have installed so you know what to expect. For example, white cedar becomes an amazing silvery gray that is really popular. Keep in mind that without protection, your wood fence won’t last as long as it would otherwise.
- Painted Wood Fence – One of the great things about painting your wood fence is the myriad of color choices to choose from. You can match the color of your home, use a contrasting color, go with the classic white, or even use several different colors for a unique appearance (assuming your community doesn’t object, of course). The drawback is that you’ll need to repaint it every few years and that involves scraping off the existing, which can be an arduous task. It does give you the option to change color whenever you choose, though.
- Stained Wood Fence – If you are looking for away to protect your wood fence and reduce maintenance, staining is the way to go. You won’t have to reapply stain nearly as often as you would paint and even when you do, it isn’t as challenging to prep the surface. While there aren’t as many options in terms of colors, you can choose whether to use a semi-transparent stain to let the grain show through or a solid stain. Alternatively, you can go with a clear product that just protects without changing the natural color.
